How to Recognise Real Made-in-Italy Leather

16 May 2026

Grain, smell, finishes — everything that sets an artisanal bag apart from an imitation.

Grain, smell, finishes — everything that sets an artisanal Italian bag apart from an imitation.

The grain: natural or printed?

Real leather has a naturally irregular grain. If every surface looks identical, be suspicious: it's probably a printed grain on a synthetic.

The smell

Genuine leather has a characteristic, rich and woody smell. Faux leather smells of plastic or of new product.

The finishes

Even stitching, protected edges, careful lining. An artisanal Italian bag pays attention to every detail, even the ones you don't see.

A well-cared-for Italian bag is passed down from generation to generation.

The Vera Pelle label

Look for the marking "Vera Pelle" or "Genuine Leather Made in Italy". It's a legal guarantee in Italy.

How to care for it

A regular wipe with a damp cloth. Nourishing leather cream 2-3 times a year. Avoid prolonged humidity and direct sunlight.
